Adalberto Maria Merli wears a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

In Dario Argento's Il cartaio, a serial killer in Rome runs his murders like a card game. He kidnaps women, sets up a webcam, and forces the police to play hands of internet poker against him; lose the hand and the hostage is tortured and killed on screen. Detective Anna Mari (Stefania Rocca) works the case with an Irish officer, John Brennan (Liam Cunningham), and a young video-poker expert named Remo (Silvio Muccino). Adalberto Maria Merli plays their superior, the police commissioner, who signs off on the decisions and answers for them when the hands go badly.

The one published account of the commissioner's watch describes a steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with a black dial. Rolex built the Daytona from 1963 as a chronograph for drivers, its bezel carrying a tachymeter scale that turns elapsed seconds into an average speed. The steel model on the market in 2004 was the reference 116520, the version Rolex had reworked in 2000 around its own in-house chronograph movement after decades of using bought-in calibers. The account comes with a film frame but no reference and no clear view of the dial, so the steel black-dial Daytona stands as a single description rather than a confirmed model.
