Tessio was the smart one. That's what makes his betrayal sting. Abe Vigoda plays Salvatore Tessio as a quiet, competent capo who has been with the Corleone family since the beginning, running operations in Brooklyn with less flash than Clemenza but more efficiency. He barely speaks in most scenes. He sits in rooms, listens, and calculates. When Vito dies and Michael takes over, Tessio is the one who arranges the meeting that's supposed to deliver Michael to Barzini's assassins. Tom Hagen figures it out. "It's the smart move," Tessio says when he's caught. "Sal, you've gotta let me go. Tom, can you get me off the hook? For old times' sake?" Tom can't.

Vigoda wears a watch in the film, but it has not been identified. Tessio is seventy years old and has been in the criminal organization for decades. Whatever he wears would be practical and unremarkable. He's not Sonny, broadcasting everything. He's the man in the room you forget about until he makes his move.
